Give The King Your Justice, O God
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
May he judge your people with righteousness,
and your poor with justice ...
May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the needy,
and crush the oppressor.
May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth ...
May all nations be blessed in him ...
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.
-- Psalm 72:2, 4, 8, 17-18
Theme: Prayer for the king -- the perfect king!
Outline
1-7 -- Prayer for God to give the king the gifts needed for him to rule with justice and righteousness.
8-14 -- Prayer he may have worldwide dominion, all nations serving him willingly.
15-17 -- Prayer that Israel's hopes and dreams will be fulfilled through his reign.
18-20 -- Doxology for ending of Book Two.
Notes
• Royal Messianic
• Probably composed by Solomon (remembering the prophecy about his father, David, [1 Kings 2:1-4]) as a prayer for his people to use on his (and their) behalf.
• Its vision of the future is not mere nationalism; it sees fulfillment for the nations as coming under the good and gracious rule and reign of God "who alone does wondrous things."
• God alone can make a ruler a good leader causing righteousness to flourish.
• As in our hymnals, this hymn for the ruler comes at the end of Book Two.
• "Amen" = True! It shall be so!
For Reflection
• While we dare not ever give messianic significance or claims to any current ruler, we can pray some of the petitions of this psalm. Which ones?
Prayer
Only you, Lord God, can make leaders truly good, and therefore we pray for your gifts to those who try to govern us, that justice and the redressing of human wrongs may flourish, and also the furthering of things that make for peace and plenty for all the world. The kingdom is yours, O God, and you have given all authority in heaven and on earth to your Son, Jesus Christ, our ascended Lord. Amen.
