Growing in the light
Children's sermon
Object:
small flower in a pot and a large tin can to cover the flower
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought with me a very beautiful flower in a flowerpot. (have the can covering the flower) Unfortunately, my flower is having a hard time growing. When I checked it last night it wasn't looking very healthy. Each night I remove the can and give the flower a good drink but it seems to be getting worse. I brought the flower with me this morning so that you could help me. Do you have any ideas for ways to make my flower grow again? (let them answer)
Maybe I should give it more fertilizer. Maybe I should play beautiful music. I hear that music is good for plants just like it is good for people. I can tell my flower how much I love it. Plants appreciate love just like people do. What would you do to make my flower feel happier and begin to grow? (let them answer) Did someone say I should remove the can from the flower? Does sunshine make things grow? (let them answer)
How many of you think my flower needs sunshine? (take a vote) It looks like everybody thinks sunshine is a good thing. Sunshine is light and light is good. Would you rather live in the sunshine or be covered up by a can and get no light? (let them answer)
How many of you like the darkness? (let them answer) Do you feel better when your mom or dad leaves a little light on in your bedroom at night? (let them answer) How many of you like to go outside at night when it is very dark? (let them answer)
The Bible says, "É for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true." My plant needs sunshine to make it grow. I can't keep it under a can and expect it to grow. In the light it stretches and reaches for the sky. At night my plant rests and gets ready for a new day of growth.
We are like plants. God loves us and wants us to grow. God does not want us to hide in the darkness. Darkness is for rest but the light is for growing. Jesus is the "light of the world." The Bible also teaches us that we are the "children of light." In the light we can teach others about Jesus and lead them to him.
I am going to take this can off of my plant and let it get some light. It will grow and become a beautiful flower.
