Fourth Sunday In Lent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Theme: Looking On The Heart
Call To Worship
Leader: What would happen if we looked not only at the professional stature, economic standing, or physical being of those we meet?
People: What would happen if we were to greet others by looking on the heart?
Leader: If we did not look at the outward appearance, past history, or patterns of shortcoming?
People: If we were to weigh the threads of promise beginning to shape the fabric of a person?
All: Let us focus on the signs the heart offers.
Collect
We pray, O God, to move away from judging. Let us see our prejudices in the clarity of light. Let our journey proceed with a spirit of acceptance and positive regard toward others. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Generous God, as we practice the art of generosity, remind us also to be charitable in spirit toward ourselves. As you respond to us with compassion, remind us to give ourselves a second chance. Let your spirit move within us. Amen.
23A Hymns
"Unto The Hills We Lift Our Longing Eyes" Tune: SANDON
"Father, Hear The Prayer We Offer" Tune: REGENSBURG
"Faith Of Our Fathers" Tune: ST. CATHERINE
Fourth Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:8-14
Theme: As Children Of Light
Call To Worship
God calls us to be children of light. Children are active, hopeful, optimistic, and enthusiastic. Undaunted, children try again and again. Children are in touch with what is true, what is fair, and what is good. Let us be children of light.
Collect
In the silence of Lenten darkness, we return to ourselves and find to our surprise that no darkness is completely black. Even there, you are, O God, with a piece of light breaking into the dark. Your light seeps into the dark and soon the light overpowers the dark.
Prayer Of Confession
We would live as children of light, O God of Light, routing out darkness with light. We would be active rather than passive in our faith. With the light God offers, we would expose unfair perspectives, policies, and practices. Strengthen our boldness with your spirit, O God, so we might do what is good, right, and true. In Jesus' name. Amen.
22A Hymns
"When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" Tune: HAMBURG
"In The Silence" Tune: CENACLE
"[O][Our] God, Our Help In Ages Past" Tune: ST. ANNE
Fourth Sunday In Lent
Gospel: John 9:1-41
Theme: Jesus, Light Of The World
Call To Worship
Jesus, your stories and your deeds open the eyes of our heart to the suffering of the world. You unlock the just and the right. You reveal the truth of compassion and the power of love. How fortunate that you have come to live among us, even for so short a time.
Collect
As long as you are in the world, Jesus, you are the light of the world. When you are no longer here, then we must keep the light for you. We will carry the light you have shone for us. For your sake. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When our eyes are newly open, O God, we are nearly overcome by what is wrong in the world. We recoil at rampant unfairness. We shrink at the strength of our wrongs. Help us to balance injury with right. Especially while on the Lenten journey, give us the eyes to see possibility. Strengthen our capacity to look and act through eyes of hope. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
23A Hymns
"Tell Me The [Old, Old Story][Stories] Of Jesus" Tune: STORIES OF JESUS
"Precious Lord, Take My Hand" Tune: PRECIOUS LORD
"Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior" Tune: PASS ME NOT
