Call to Worship
Leader: O God, on this Sunday before Christmas, we are thinking about your amazing love for us.
People: Restore us, O God, let your face shine, that we might be saved. (Psalm 80:3) (Teach the sign language to younger children, have them teach the congregation, and all use when response is spoken)
Leader: Behold, a young woman is with child and shall bear a son; and shall name him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14b)
People: Restore us, O God, let your face shine, that we might be saved.
Leader: A child born of love - God loving us, Mary loving God, Joseph loving God and Mary.
People: Restore us, O God, let your face shine, that we might be saved.
Leader: Love came down at Christmas to show us the way and to save us from our sins. Let us worship our God.
People: Restore us, O God, let your face shine, that we might be saved.
Lighting of the Advent Wreath Candle (Love)
(Ask two or three single folk from your congregation to light the Advent Candle. Light the first three candles before the service)
Voice 1: We have three lighted candles: they represent peace, hope, and joy.
Voice 2: Today we light the candle of love.
Voice 3: On this fourth Sunday in Advent we remember how much God loves us. God gave us the greatest gift we could ever receive. God gave us his son.
Voice 1: Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
Voice 2: Love came down at Christmas - love all holy, love divine.
Voice 3: Let us remember this all--encompassing love and share God's love with those whom we meet. Let us love one another as God has loved us. (Light the fourth candle)
(Congregation sings Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus)
Call to Confession
Joseph was a righteous man, who out of kindness planned to dismiss Mary from his life because she was pregnant. He thought he was doing the right thing, but God had other plans. Let us confess our unwillingness to search for God's plan for our lives.
Prayer of Confession
Loving God and Savior, we think too much. We work so hard to try to figure out what we should do. We research our problems on the computer, we ask experts, we talk to friends, but so often we don't leave room for your Word to seep through. Joseph thought he knew the "right" thing to do. So often we're sure of the right thing, too. Forgive us, O God, for not opening ourselves to your Word for us. Open us to your steadfast love. The love that gave us Jesus Christ is there for all of us. Calm us, God, to truly know the gift that saves us and guides us.
Assurance of Pardon
God comes to all of us with saving grace. During this Christmas season, let us remember the loving gift of Jesus Christ who died for us and rose again for us. Behold! Our sins are forgiven. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Psalm 80:1--7, 17--19
Matthew 1:18--25: Have three men and/or teenage boys read and act out. The cast would include a Narrator, Joseph, and an Angel.
Charge and Benediction
To all God's beloved, who are called to be saints, Grace to you and peace from God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Please pass the peace to one another, saying, "Peace be with you," and responding, "And also with you."
Go out into the world in peace, knowing that you are surrounded by God's love. Tell the good news of Jesus Christ to all whom you meet. Sing the carols of Christmas with heightened joy for God is truly with us. And now may peace, joy, hope, and love fill your hearts this day. Amen.
