The race is hard to...

The race is hard to run by ourselves. The strongest runners are relay runners who sprint hard. They run their hearts out and pass the baton to the next runner. So it was with Christ, when it was time to empower the disciples to build a church and spread the Good News.
Jesus was most likely an individual of great personal strength. We seldom suspect that he had a head cold or missed an opportunity to preach. However, Jesus knew the work that must be done, he could not do alone. So he reveals much about himself and his expectations for his closest advisors. Jesus empowers his followers by telling them that God will send a Comforter (KJV), or a Helper (NASB), or an Advocate (NRSV), or a Counselor (NIV). Whatever assistance is coming, it will be invisible but empowering as the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). This is the only place in John where this so-called paraclete or Helper is identified as the Holy Spirit. Jesus is promising a great future for the ministry as he passes the baton to new runners.
Were there doubters? Surely. Jesus repeatedly says: "Believe me," as if to utter, "Believe in me." For when he returns to his Father, Jesus' work on earth is done.
