As a professor in a professional faculty in the local university, my friend is asked each year to write many letters of reference for graduating seniors. It is not a job she relishes. Students anxious to find the most favorable positions naturally wish to have only the positive aspects of their records emphasized. Employers overwhelmed with applications want to know the unvarnished truth about applicants. My friend tries to balance these needs by writing "sandwich style": good news, bad news, good news. Students sometimes object to the inclusion of any bad news, but experience has shown that this type of letter is often a far more effective reference than a glowing report. Without the bad news, the good news is almost meaningless. -- Walker
