Just a rock
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: If your church building has a
cornerstone, show it to the children. (If your church building
does not have a cornerstone, talk about your experience with
building cornerstones or show them a building nearby that has a
cornerstone.) It might have some interesting writing on it --
probably the date it was laid, etc. Talk to them about the
importance of such a stone. Tell them how historical artifacts
are often put in cornerstones. Let them speculate what might be
in your church building cornerstone. "The cornerstone is the most
important part of a church. It helps hold the church building up
and it keeps important information. Often, when a building is
torn down, the people throw everything away except the
cornerstone."
"Just as this stone is the most important one in our building, so Jesus is the most important person in our lives."
The children will have learned something of the history of your congregation and the meaning of a cornerstone, but, most importantly, they will have learned about the importance of Jesus in their lives.
