The Sermon:
Have you ever heard that the owl is a wise, old bird? Do you believe an owl is wise? Maybe he is. We use an owl as a symbol for wisdom. We use symbols to help us understand things. For instance, we use a heart for love, or a cross for Jesus. So, we think of being wise when we think of an owl. What is wisdom? It is not just knowing a lot of things. It is knowing how to use what we know to make good choices for a happier life.
The Bible has lots to say about wisdom. *Here in the book of Proverbs we find wisdom and lots of good advice. This book of our Old Testament is hundreds of years old. It was written by wise Hebrew people, including wise King Solomon. The amazing thing is that after all these hundreds of years, there is still lots of advice for us today. This is not a book of Bible stories or poems, but it is a book with short sentences and verses telling us what a wise person with common sense will do about such things as good manners, family relations, good personal qualities, business deals, respect for the poor, self-control, choosing friends, being kind and helpful, our relationship with God, and much more. Proverbs 9:10 tells us the first step to becoming wise, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." This fear of the Lord is a reverence, a deep feeling of respect, love, and awe, realizing our God is greater than anything or anyone.
Jesus, too, had something to say about wisdom. He said people who hear and do what he says are wise like the wisdom of building a house on a rock foundation. People who hear but don't do what he says are foolish like building a house on sand. The house on sand will fall apart (Matthew 7:24).
If an owl was really wise, he would say, "A wise person with common sense will have great reverence for the Lord and build his/her whole life on obedience on obedience to Jesus and his teachings."
