Honoring God
Children's sermon
Object:
a flag of our country
Good morning, boys and girls. Here we are to celebrate another great Sunday. I am so happy you are here that I asked the organist to play something special just for you. (have the organist play a short fanfare) Wow! Now do you believe how happy I am to see you? Sunday is a very special day for all of us.
Do you know why we come to our church on Sunday? (let them answer) Do you remember that Jesus died on a Friday? That's right, it was a Friday around noon that Jesus was put on the cross and he hung on that cross until he finally died around 3:00 in the afternoon. But what happened on Sunday? (let them answer) That's right! Jesus rose from the dead and greeted people in many places. That's why we have chosen Sunday as our special day to honor the Lord.
Do you know what honor means? (let them answer) There are certain things that we are supposed to honor. For instance, we honor the flag. Not because it is pretty but because it is the symbol of our country. The flag is something we honor because it stands for our freedom and our liberty. We honor the flag because of people who died to defend our country. The flag is very special to us and we give it great honor. We treat it differently than we do other pretty pieces of cloth.
Sunday stands for the day Jesus rose from the dead. It is a special day when we attend Sunday school to learn about Jesus. We sing hymns, and we confess our sins and ask God for forgiveness. We listen to the words written in the Bible and pray that God will bless our families. Now, we can do many of these things in our home or while we play or work. But on Sunday, all of the people of God come together as a family and worship him. We honor the day.
So Sunday is something different than Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Some people make Friday their day to honor God and some people choose Saturday. Saint Paul says that is all right and we should not be disturbed about it. But Christians like us chose Sunday to honor God. We remember when he rose from the dead and showed us the promise that God wants to share with us. The promise is that someday we will rise from the dead like Jesus rose from the dead and we too will live eternally with God.
Prayer: Please accept our praise as we honor you, O Lord. Amen.
