Sometimes truth comes to us by way of an invalid argument or perspective. Christopher Columbus sailed west over the Atlantic thinking that China was out there somewhere. But the truth of his search was clouded by his ignorance of the North and South American continents lying between China and himself. In France of the '30s and '40s there was the general concern, which proved true, that Germany would make a military move toward them. But this truth was embedded in a false premise that the Germans would make a frontal attack.
