Thinking Tall
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle C
Call To Worship
Leader: We need not slouch or slump or sag. It is okay to stretch and reach and think tall. We need not crouch without aim or goal. It is okay to proceed with a sense of high purpose.
People: God wastes no energy being aimless but follows a careful design. We come here to renew the joy of grasping a right purpose so we also might know the peace of work completed.
Collect
We would have our purpose agree with your plans for us, O God. We would have our words and actions speak of your purpose. In your Spirit. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Draw us out of our cocoons, O God, when we threaten to hibernate with inertia. However short our goals appear to us, fortify us to greet them with the determination of a tall spirit. Amen.
16C Hymns
"Morning Has Broken" Tune: BUNESSAN
"Let Me Enter God's Own Dwelling" Tune: UNSER HERRSCHER
"God Is Working His Purpose Out" Tune: PURPOSE
Eighth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:51-58
Theme: A Bee Sting
Call To Worship
The bee sting smarts. Its stinging seems to hurt forever. Then abruptly the stabbing stops. Just as suddenly, in a moment, we will know the change from living in a troublesome, perishable body to freedom of spirit. Let us worship God whom we can count on to lead us through present trouble.
Collect
We leave to you, O God, the mystery of what happens after we die. Just as we can trust you in this life, so do we choose to rely on you in what comes later. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We need your help, O God, to persist in the direction you would have us go. Steady us through the holding on times. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
16C Hymns
"Grant Us Courage To Cope" Tune: FOUNDATION
"Be [Calm][Still], My Soul" Tune: FINLANDIA
"How Like A Gentle Spirit" Tune: SURSUM CORDA
Eighth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel: Luke 6:39-49
Theme: "Fig Newtons"
Call To Worship
Now how could they duplicate the tiny seeds in figs? They can only make "Fig Newtons" from real figs. Only fig trees bear figs, and only good fig trees bear good fruit. Let us be like "Fig Newtons."
Collect
Accept our intention, O God, to make being Christian solid, active deed rather than passive, artificial principle. Let us pay attention to what is in the heart so our reputation will take care of itself. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
It is difficult, O God, to see that our actions are of the same quality as our faith. We are inconsistent. We do well for a while then forget about our promises as Christians when we most need to remember them. Forgive us. Encourage us to improve. Amen.
16C Hymns
"O Splendor Of [God's Glory Bright][The Father's Light]" Tune: PUER NOBIS or SPLENDOR PATERNAE
"We've A Story To Tell To The Nations" Tune: MESSAGE
"Christian, Rise And Act Your Creed" Tune: INNOCENTS
