Each of our lectionary readings for today reminds us that we have forgotten who we are. It may well be that we have offended God, but God is big enough to be able to handle it. What is more important is that we have offended ourselves. We have lost touch with our place in the house of God. We need a high priest who can help us find our way back home.

Exodus 20:1-17
This account of the giving of the Ten Commandments prompted John Wesley to comment on the meaning of the first commandment. Apply it with me now to your own life and to the political climate in which we are electing a new president and new congress. The Methodist founder wrote:

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me…. (v. 5)

Take a piece of aluminum foil and press down on it with a sharp object, creating letters and words. Make sure you can read it clearly. Then fold the foil in half and in half and in half again. Now use your X-Ray Vision to see through the layers of metal and read the original inscription.

Object: This message makes a good role play. You will need some cookies, a table, and some play money we will call shekels. Have children play the roles of the seller, a poor person, a woman, a foreigner, and an important, rich person. You just need one seller, and you can use one child for each of the other roles, or if you have the time and children available, you can have as many children play those roles as you like. Split the money among the children playing the non-seller roles.

Justin sighed. It was time for yet another rugby lesson, and he hated playing rugby. He didn't really like any kinds of sport, but rugger was worse than most. It felt to Justin much like a glorified punch-up, and he didn't like to fight.

Psalm 19 celebrates two different media through which God is revealed: nature and the law.

The first part of the psalm calls our attention to the presence of God in nature -- "The heavens are telling the glory of God." The word "glory" is the Hebrew kabod and literally means weight or heaviness. The derived meaning is something akin to "reputation." God's reputation is evident in the heavens.

But reputation for what?

John W. Clarke
Having heard the gospel this morning let me introduce a word from Paul when he said to the church in Ephesus, "And that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love" (Ephesians 3:17 NRSV).

What Paul is saying here is the more Christians know about Christ; the more amazed we are at Christ's love for us. When Jesus lives in our hearts, we discover a love that goes right down into the soil of God's loving revelation and creation.
Mark J. Molldrem
When Neil Armstrong was on the moon, an American flag was planted to signify the accomplishment of his journey. The goal had been established in 1960 to set a man on the moon before the end of the decade. In 1969, that goal was achieved in a most dramatic way.
Paul W. Kummer
These are Ten Commandments that little children know to be true:

1. When your mom is mad at your dad, don't let her brush your hair.

2. No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats.

3. You can't trust dogs to watch your food.

4. Never hold a dustbuster and a cat at the same time.

5. You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.

6. Puppies still have bad breath even after eating a tic-tac.

7. When your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.
