A Call To Worship
Worship Aids, Lectionary Year B
Call To Worship (based on Mark 10:35-45)
All: The disciples had a request for Jesus. They said: "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory."
One: But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"
All: They replied, "We are able."
One: Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
All: but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
One: Jesus told us:
All: "Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."
One: Lord --
All: we are able.
Unison Invocation
Lord, we are able, or at least we earnestly wish to proclaim so. We cannot possibly know what lies ahead -- what trials we may endure in your name, or what it may cost us to be proclaimed your disciples. We count upon you to strengthen our resolve when things get tough, and to be the light for our path when all becomes dark. Hear us now, while we are strong, and shelter us, when we are weak. We are able, though you will justify us. Amen.
Unison Psalm (Psalm 91)
You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
Because you have made the LORD your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.
Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.
Offering Prayer
We offer up to you that which is yours, and especially today we offer up our desire to be servants to each other, and to your people near and far. Amen.
Children's Benediction
