Good News Banners
Object: a church banner
The Point: Our lives are to be a banner of the good news of Jesus.
The Lesson: Good morning boys and girls. I am truly happy that you have come up to sit with me and to hear up close the good news about Jesus.
I have a church banner with me this morning. What does the church use banners for? (let children answer) The banner announces a special message about Jesus. (explain the banner to the children)
In Jesus' day when a king went out to visit a community, he was preceded with banners and people who would tell everyone that the king is coming, to prepare the way for the king, and to get ready because your king is coming.
Mark tells us today that John the Baptist did that for Jesus. You might say that John himself was a church banner. He was wearing camel's hair clothing and he ate locusts. John looked like a prophet of God. As a man of God, John was in the wilderness preparing people for Jesus' coming. John tells everyone to prepare for Jesus' arrival by being baptized for the forgiveness of sins. The people were to look to God so that they would be ready to receive Jesus into their lives.
As we prepare to celebrate Jesus' birthday, the banners in the church not only call us to celebrate our Savior's birth but also to be about preparing our hearts and lives to receive Jesus when he comes again. We are to prepare the same way as John called the people of his day to prepare. We are to look to God to forgive our sins, and we are to live our lives in a way that Jesus will be proud to call us his children. We are to be kind and caring of others and like John, we are to help others to be ready for Jesus' return.
I suppose we might say that our lives are to be banners proclaiming the good news of our Savior's coming.
Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, we look forward to celebrating your birth. Help us to prepare by sharing your love and grace with others. And especially may our lives reflect your promise to come again, to claim us as your family forever and ever. Jesus, bless these children and us to your glory. Amen.
