Call To Worship
Leader: He was wounded for our transgressions.
People: By a perversion of justice he was taken away.
Leader: He was crushed for our iniquities.
People: By a perversion of justice he was taken away.
Leader: Upon him was the punishment that made us whole.
People: By a perversion of justice he was taken away.
Leader: By his bruises we are healed.
All: By a perversion of justice he was taken away.
Collect
We stand with you today at the cross, O God, aware of how slowly -- even accidentally -- the important changes happen in our world. We stand with you committed to do our part to practice love by relieving misery where we find it. For the sake of your Son. Amen.
Confession
Forgive us, O merciful God, when we misuse justice. Forgive us when we take the easy way out by using another as a scapegoat. Forgive us for going astray and turning to our own way when we could have taken responsibility for what needed to be remedied. Forgive us, O God, for killing you so many times. Amen.
27B Hymns
"O For A World" Tune: AZMON
"To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord" Tune: KINGSFOLD
"We Shall Overcome" Tune: WE SHALL OVERCOME
Good Friday
Second Lesson: Hebrews 10:16-35
Theme: Where There Is Forgiveness
Call To Worship
Leader: Where there is forgiveness,
People: There is no need for more sacrifice.
Leader: Where there is forgiveness,
People: There is hope.
Leader: Where there is forgiveness,
People: There is a new and living way.
Collect
God of the cross, may we reflect the freeing, forgiving events of Good Friday by living thankful lives and by encouraging others to know the way of respect and concern for those around them. Amen.
Confession
Help us let this day of sacrifice for our sakes make a difference in our lives. Teach us, O God of compassion, to live within a circle of hope that permeates and influences all that we think and choose and do. Let us carry a perspective of hope into the classroom, the workplace, and the family kitchen. Amen.
27B Hymns
"Beneath The Cross Of Jesus" Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
"God Of The Sparrow, God Of The Whale" Tune: ROEDER
"I Am Thine, O Lord" Tune: I AM THINE
Good Friday
Gospel: John 18:1--19:42
Theme: "Judge Him According To Your Law"
Call To Worship
Today is the day we are in the depths. Before Easter could happen, Jesus had to endure the suffering of Good Friday. Let us stand here on this day with Jesus in the depths of grief.
Collect
How could you let this happen to your own son, God? We can hardly stand it that you let him die for our sake. We comprehend so little about sacrifice. We understand so little about the depth of your love. We know only about how it feels to lose someone we love. Amen.
Confession
Forgive us, God, when we play politics at the expense of others. Forgive us when we lack the mettle to stand for what is right and what is just. Forgive us for hating Pilate before we recognize that we are as human as Pilate. Amen.
27B Hymns
"Out Of The Depths I Call" Tune: ST. BRIDE OR "Out Of The Depths, O God, We Call" Tune: FENNVILLE
"What Wondrous Love Is This" Tune: CHRISTOPHER or WONDROUS LOVE
"How Could A God Whose Name Is Love" Tune: KINGSFOLD or TALLIS' THIRD TUNE
