The Babylonians stormed the ancient city of Jerusalem in the year 587 BC and destroyed it. Ten years previously, Jerusalem had surrendered to Babylon but then revolted in an attempt to gain its independence. The second attack had been extensive and decisive, with many Israelites of the city and surrounding countryside transported to Babylon and held in captivity. After a number of years, many of the political prisoners returned home. But others, who had become involved in Babylonian life and private businesses, decided to remain.
