Pastor: It was a time when society was crumbling; and there was serious doubt that humanity could be redeemed.
People: A time when morals had nearly disappeared, while greed forced people to work seven days per week, from before sun up to after sun down.
Pastor: A time when religious life was at a low ebb.
People: Many of the preachers were discouraged and cynical. Either they ignored sin all together, or they preached the wrath and judgment of God at every turn.
Pastor: And then came a man named Charles.
People: A man named Charles Wesley.
Pastor: A man who wrote a song about God's love.
People: God's love and not God's wrath?
Pastor: God's love, a love that brought the joy of heaven to earth. A love expressed through Jesus Christ that was merciful, pure compassion -- an unbounded holy affection for people caught up in the nets of sin, straddling the hard edges of life, and struggling with unremitting newscasts of humanity's failures.
People: Share with us that re-creating love, O God; cleanse us and restore us; fill us with wonder and praise as we come to worship You this morning.
Hymn Of Love: "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
Pastor: God's wonderful love comes to His beloved creatures, both poor and rich, high and low, in every race and culture. His yearning to have fellowship with us knows no bounds, whether we are old or young.
People: (To be sung) "Jesus Loves The Little Children" (Copy in, using your CCLI#)
Pastor: In fact, because God first loves us, we have a model for loving others. An earlier generation's favorite song for weddings was "O Perfect Love."
People: (To be sung) "O Perfect Love" (Copy in verse 2)
Pastor: Come then, worship the Lord in quiet hope and steadfast faith. Hear the words of His holy affection, His graciousness, and His compassion.
