Planting for Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a packet of seeds
The Point: Jesus wants to tell others about his love that saves.
The Lesson: Good morning, girls and boys! Thank you for sharing with me this morning. I brought a packet of seeds with me. Do you know what will happen if I plant these seeds? (let children answer) That's right. How can you tell what kind of plant will grow from the seeds? (let children answer) You can tell what will grow from the seeds by looking at the picture on the packet. In order for these seeds to grow and produce what we see on the package, I need to do a number of things. First, I will have to plant them in some good dirt. Then I will have to water them. Patience is needed too because it will be a while before you can see that anything is growing. What else is important for plants to grow? (let children answer) Sunlight, that's right. When you work hard to provide all these things, you will be rewarded with a harvest.
In our reading from Matthew, we heard Jesus talk about planting and growing too. He was using that as a picture of what he wants you and me to do. We should be planting the seeds of faith. That is you and I should tell others all about Jesus. How Jesus forgives our sins. How Jesus loves us so much that he gave his life for us that we too might have life. Jesus wants you to live your life in a way that your friends will know that you follow Jesus. But he also lets us know that sometimes sowing Jesus' love will not have any effect. Sometimes your friends may not like that you are Jesus' follower. But sometimes your friend will come to Sunday school or church with you. Their faith will then be a witness to others and the family of God will grow.
This fall when you see the harvest of corn or wheat or potatoes remember Jesus wants you to plant the seeds of his love and peace so that the harvest of his kingdom will be great too.
Closing Prayer: Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for the gift of seeds that produce our food. Thank you for the farmers who plant and harvest. We pray for their efforts and the fruit of the land. And Jesus, we pray for your Holy Spirit to be upon these children and us so that together we may plant the seeds of your kingdom. Nurture our faith until the day of the great harvest. Amen.
