MR. ROBERTS: Oh. I'm so glad you're with me. I thought about you all week. Uh-huh. Every once in a while I'd see something interesting and I'd think: "Well, someday I'll show that to my friend. Uh-huh.
And now we're together. Do you see this? This is just a little ladder. Can you say "ladder"? Did you ever see a ladder? We're going to use a ladder today. Would you like that? I think we'll have fun. Did you know what this said? The minute you saw it on the picture today? Did you know that it said "Jesus"? Jesus. J-E-S-U-S. Jesus. How about you, fish? Did you have a good week? You look healthy. (HE FEEDS FISH) Oh! Did you see that? He got some food and went right down to the bottom. (DOORBELL RINGS) Oh, there's somebody at the back door. It may be Mr. McDoley.
I ordered some things for our story today. It's Mr. McDoley!
MR. McDOLEY:
(ENTERS) Good day. Good day, Mr. Roberts. Good day. A busy day today.
MR. ROBERTS: It's usually a busy day for you, Mr. McDoley. Come in.
MR. McDOLEY: Here's your order. Here's your order. First of all, here's the money bag.
MR. ROBERTS: Thank you.
MR. McDOLEY: And then I have a hand puppet. Yes, sir, a hand puppet.
MR. ROBERTS: Yes, that's right. I ordered a hand puppet. All righty?
MR. McDOLEY: All righty.
MR. ROBERTS: Thank you very much. A money bag.
MR. McDOLEY: Right.
MR. ROBERTS: And a hand puppet.
MR. McDOLEY: Right.
MR. ROBERTS: This is nice.
MR. McDOLEY: That's my plastic bag, Mr. Roberts. The hand puppet didn't come in a bag so I used one of mine. You may keep it if you wish.
MR. ROBERTS: No. I have plenty of plastic bags, Mr. McDoley. You may take it with you.
MR. McDOLEY: All righty, Mr. Roberts. The money bag and the hand puppet are yours and I'll just take my plastic bag. And speedy delivery off. All righty?
MR. ROBERTS: Well, how much is the delivery?
MR. McDOLEY: That would be "one -- two" today, Mr. Roberts. All righty?
MR. ROBERTS: Great. All right. Here you are.
MR. McDOLEY: One -- two -- I thank you, Mr. Roberts. A busy day. I'll be running along now.
MR. ROBERTS: Can't stay, Mr. McDoley?
MR. McDOLEY: Can't stay today. Good day to you, Mr. Roberts. (EXITS)
MR. ROBERTS: (AS MR. McDOLEY) "Can't stay. Busy day. Busy day." I know he's busy. Sometimes I like it when he can stay a while. But I like being with you today. Uh-huh. Because we can have a story together. Now, we need these three things. One, the ladder. Remember the ladder?
Two, the money bag. And three, the hand puppet. Now, we're almost ready. Let me see now, then ... there once was a very rich man named Mr. Zacchaeus.
(MR. ROBERTS PUTS ON HAND PUPPET)
ZACCHAEUS: Yes?
MR. ROBERTS: Oh, my goodness. Mr. Zacchaeus, you startled me.
ZACCHAEUS: I did? I'm sorry, but you startled me, too.
MR. ROBERTS: I'm sorry, too, Mr. Zacchaeus. Well, why don't you tell the people about yourself.
ZACCHAEUS: Do you mean how I acted before I met Jesus?
MR. ROBERTS: Would you do that?
ZACCHAEUS: I'd love to, Mr. Roberts. Well, I was a very rich man.
MR. ROBERTS: And tell them how you got the riches, Mr. Zacchaeus.
ZACCHAEUS: I'm really ashamed about that, Mr. Roberts. I really wasn't a nice man before I met Jesus. Well, I don't mind telling it now. I robbed the people. I collected taxes and I took some of the government's money for myself.
MR. ROBERTS: And what happened when you met Jesus?
ZACCHAEUS: It was a big day when Jesus came to town and I tried to see him, but there was such a crowd I couldn't see. I'm very short. Did you notice?
MR. ROBERTS: There are a lot of people who are short, Mr. Zacchaeus.
ZACCHAEUS: I know, but I was trying to see and I couldn't.
MR. ROBERTS: What did you do, Mr. Zacchaeus?
ZACCHAEUS: Well, I -- would you just help me with this ladder, Mr. Roberts? (HE SETS THE LADDER AGAINST HIS CHEST) I just climbed up in a tree. (HE CLIMBS UP ON MR. ROBERTS' HEAD) And started looking. (ZACCHAEUS SQUIRMS AROUND ON MR. ROBERTS' HEAD)
MR. ROBERTS: Are you quite comfortable up there, Mr. Zacchaeus?
ZACCHAEUS: I was just getting settled, Mr. Roberts. Now I'm all right. As I was saying, I started looking for Jesus, and when He came into view, do you know what He did?
MR. ROBERTS: I think I do, Mr. Zacchaeus, but you'd better tell us anyway.
ZACCHAEUS: All right, I will. Jesus said for me to come down because He wanted to eat at my house. Yes, sir. That's what he said. He wanted to go to my house and eat with me. So, I came down. (HE FALLS DOWN INTO MR. ROBERTS' LAP)
MR. ROBERTS: Oh, Mr. Zacchaeus, did you fall?
ZACCHAEUS: Well, of course I fell.
MR. ROBERTS: I knew you just fell, Mr. Zacchaeus. No, I meant, did you fall when Jesus was there?
ZACCHAEUS: Oh, I see. No, no, I didn't fall then. We went to my house and we ate.
MR. ROBERTS: And then what happened?
ZACCHAEUS: Then Jesus and I became good friends.
MR. ROBERTS: What a nice story.
ZACCHAEUS: Oh, it's not over yet, Mr. Roberts.
MR. ROBERTS: Oh, sorry. Please, do continue, Mr. Zacchaeus.
ZACCHAEUS: Thank you, I will. Well, I was such a changed man that I gave half of all the wealth I had to feed the poor and then I paid back all the money I had stolen.
MR. ROBERTS: That was very nice, Mr. Zacchaeus.
ZACCHAEUS: It's what I wanted to do. When you become a friend of Jesus, He changes your life.
MR. ROBERTS: That's a great story, Mr. Zacchaeus.
ZACCHAEUS: May I say just one more thing, Mr. Roberts?
MR. ROBERTS: Of course, Mr. Zacchaeus. Go right ahead.
ZACCHAEUS: Thank you. I just wanted to tell people how important it is to be a friend of Jesus. He will change your life and make it good.
MR. ROBERTS: That's right, Mr. Zacchaeus. You can be a friend of Jesus, just like you and I are friends. Yes, you can. Jesus said He came to save people just like Mr. Zacchaeus and you and me, too. Well, that's the end of my story. Did you like it? I liked sharing it with you. Do you know what? It's time for me to go. But I'll be back. Yes, I will. I'll be back to be with you, my friend. But, until I come back our friend Jesus will always be with you.
Do whatever it takes to get close to Jesus.
