Call To Worship
Come to this place of worship where we have the possibility of meeting God in a way that can change our lives. God calls us to be open people, transparent to God and to our innermost selves so that God's transforming spirit might reach us.
Collect
God who recognizes us throughout all that changes us, we come to you without a hiding veil. Descend upon our open hearts so we might learn what is most important in living our lives. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we encounter you, O God, in such a way that you transform us, we appear different to those around us before we ourselves recognize the change. We mask our true feelings when they cause others to be uncomfortable. Either we are honest, God, or we are not. Help us to strengthen our integrity. Encourage us to be with others in such a way that they need not hide from us or we from them. Amen.
18C Hymns
"Spirit, Spirit Of Gentleness" Tune: SPIRIT
"By Whatever Name We Call You" Tune: OGONTZ
"Spirit Of God, Descend Upon My Heart" Tune: MORECAMBE
Transfiguration Of Our Lord
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 3:12--4:2
Theme: Transparent
Call To Worship
Leader: What of our souls do we let show through? Are we ever transparent?
People: Life hurts and disillusionment cause us to become so protective that we avoid letting others see the beauty of our souls. Our mirrors become so streaked with camouflage that not even we recognize our true selves.
Leader: In this hour of worship, let us remove the veil of film from our hearts and open ourselves again to God's truth.
Collect
When we turn to you, O God, we begin to see clearly. With the freedom of your spirit, we gain heart for that which we must do. When we return to you, we become more like Christ. With openness toward the truth, we become conduits of your mercy. All praise to you, our freeing, merciful Sustainer. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We confess, O God, that it is easier to wear a veil than to be transparent. Open our hearts to accept the freeing truth which you bring through Christ so we also might be transformed.
In the Spirit of God. Amen.
18C Hymns
"O Wondrous Sight, O Vision Fair" or "Oh, Wondrous Type! Oh, Vision Fair" Tune: DEO GRACIAS
"Holy Spirit, Truth Divine" Tune: MERCY
"I Sing The Praise Of Love Almighty" Tune: ST. PETERSBURG
Transfiguration Of Our Lord
Gospel: Luke 9:28-36 (37-43)
Theme: Dazzled Silent
Call To Worship
At Jesus' transfiguration, his closest disciples saw inexplicable changes. Telling no one any of the things they had seen, they kept silent. Even those close to God are silenced into a time-out of ponderous wondering as we become aware of course-changing truths in our lives. Come to the quiet of this place where questioning can lead to answering silence and can bring the timely speaking of truth.
Collect
Leader: God, who sends us into a dazzle of silence with your blessing,
People: We thank you for entering the silence with us.
Leader: God, who provides times for sorting out our role during the puzzles of change,
People: We thank you for moments and hours set aside for time with you, O God.
Prayer Of Confession
Especially, O God, when events happen that we cannot comprehend, we keep silent. Be near to us when we enter the lonely silence of puzzling and pondering. Stay close as we return to wondering about and questioning everything. Give us courage to speak when it is time. Through the Holy Spirit. Amen.
18C Hymns
"Jesus, Take Us To The Mountain" Tune: SILVER SPRING
"[It Only Takes A Spark][Pass It On]" Tune: PASS IT ON
"Go, My Children, With My Blessing" Tune: AR HYD Y NOS
