Love as the result of forgiveness
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Love as the result of forgiveness
Gospel Note:
Although the wording of v. 47a is ambiguous, read in light of the parable of the two creditors that precedes it (vv. 41-43), it is clear that the point of Luke's version of this incident is that the (unnamed) woman loved much because she had been forgiven, i.e., that love is a consequence of forgiveness rather than a pre-condition for it.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
O God, O Lord Of Heaven And Earth
Spread, Oh, Spread, Almighty Word
Almighty God, Your Word Is Cast
Baptized Into Your Name Most Holy
In Christ There Is No East Or West
''Take Up Your Cross,'' The Savior Said
86
Proper 6 -- Pentecost 4 -- OT 11
Lord,
it is interesting to think of hospitality as
entertaining angels unawares.
Giving directions, sharing food, providing a place
to sleep for the night is so easy to arrange!
It thrills us to think that we are doing something
noble when it appears so mundane on the surface.
The ''catch'' is that you encourage us to practice
hospitality among people like:
A woman of the city ... a Sinner!
We draw conclusions. We become uncomfortable.
Sometimes we become irritated and angry.
This is not the behavior you want from us.
As we practice the ministry of hospitality,
teach us to focus upon you and not upon ourselves.
Grant us the humility to offer hospitality
anywhere and everywhere hurting people are found.
Enable us to see that the ordinary ministries of life
can be noble.
Amen.
