Scripture Notes
For use with Common, Lutheran and Roman Catholic Lectionaries
As we become increasingly aware of the oppressive political situation in which the Jesus of history lived, we recognize that when he called upon his fellow Jews to return their allegiance to Yahweh and to prepare for the coming kingdom of Yahweh, giving them hope and helping them to see, and hear, and walk, he became not only a religious leader but also a prominent political leader of his people and a significant threat to the Roman occupation forces and to the small percentage of his fellow Jews who cooperated with the Romans.
