The Great Thanksgiving (Holy, Holy, Holy)
Children's sermon
Let Them Answer
(Bring a bag containing a Bible, a toy kids like to play with, and a delicate figurine to show the children.)
Good morning! This morning I'd like to have you look at some things with me. Do you like surprises? (LTA) So do I! I brought some surprises with me in my bag. Let's see if you can tell what is special about these things. (Take out the toy) Does everyone know what this is? (LTA) Yes. It's a neat Play-dough press. Does anyone have one of these? (LTA) How does it work? (LTA) We can place the Playdough in here and make all kinds of things. Would this be something you'd take good care of? (LTA) Yes, it's something we'd put away and wouldn't leave outside or in the middle of the floor to get stepped on.
Let's look at something else. (Take out the figurine.) This next surprise is wrapped very well so it won't be broken. Do you know what it is? (LTA) It's a very delicate and special piece of blown glass that is shaped like a ballerina. Is this something you would play with outside? (LTA) No. We'd want to take very good care of it, wouldn't we? We'd probably place it somewhere so that it wouldn't get bumped or stepped on. Would it be even more special than the Playdough press? (LTA) Yes. We'd have to take even better care of it.
(Take out the Bible). Who can tell me what this is? (LTA) It's a Bible. It says "Holy Bible" on it. What do you think holy means? (LTA) Holy means special or set aside for a special purpose. Why do we call it a Holy Bible? (LTA) It's a very special book in which we read God's word for us.
Now let's see ... (Place the items on ascending steps or in a row in front of you.) We have a Playdough Press which is a special toy. And we have a glass figurine which is a very special decoration. And we have a Bible, which is a very, very special book.
In the Bible and in songs one way of saying something was very, very, very special was to repeat the word holy three times. One of the songs we sing in the great thanksgiving does that. Do any of you remember it? (LTA) "Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of pow'r and might." What is special? (LTA) Right! God is so very, very, very special that we sing "Holy, holy, holy." That's our way of showing God how very special he is to us.
Is God more special than a toy? (LTA) Is God more special than the figurine? (LTA) Is God more special even than the book we call the Holy Bible? (LTA) Yes. God is so special we can sing that song with everyone to let them know how great God is. Who should sing it with us? (LTA) Anyone else? (LTA) In the preface - the introduction to this song - we hear that it will also be sung by "angels and archangels and all the company of heaven." Shall we sing it together? (LTA) "Holy, holy, holy, Lord ...
