John the Baptizer would have been a strange sight to twentieth century eyes. But to his contemporaries, he had all of the markings of an authentic prophet of God. In contrast to the well-kept temple priests and the impeccable Pharisees, John was a rugged wilderness preacher. In the Exodus account of the Hebrew people, Moses had his first encounter with God in the wilderness of Midian. He received the Torah, on tablets of stone from the top of a desert mountain called Sinai.
