A late nineteenth century Jewish immigrant, from western Siberia to the U.S., was the universally well-liked Irving Berlin. His composition, "God Bless America," had been written for a musical, but it didn't fit right, so he had laid it aside.
But when the rumble of war in Europe threatened to encompass the world, Mr. Berlin brought out the composition and had it published in 1938. Kate Smith was a popular music singer on radio at that time, and she helped to popularize "God Bless America."
It took off immediately, and became sort of an unofficial national anthem during the days of World War II.
Since that time it was less popular; until September 11, 2001, when terrorists forced our nation into another war. Probably no other musical composition has been used to express how Americans feel in the aftermath of 9/11. Easily memorized and sung, the chorus is:
God bless America, land that I love.
Stand beside her and guide her through the night with the light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam,
God bless America, my home sweet home;
God bless America, my home sweet home.
Our fervent prayer would add Amen.
