It may be difficult for persons who did not live in the South in the 1960s to comprehend that many "white" congregations had duly approved policies which excluded African--Americans from attending worship. It was a highly emotional issue. It was an expression of segregation at its worst.
Stillman College is a Presbyterian institution in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a predominantly black student body. Stillman was founded in 1876 by Southern Presbyterians. Covenant Presbyterian Church from its founding in 1949 had a close and friendly relationship with Stillman.
