Playing Time: 3 minutes
Setting: The office of Dr. Willis
Props: A file folder, a new book
Costumes: Contemporary
Time: The present
Cast: DR. WILLIS -- a psychiatrist
MRS. KING
DEBBIE -- her daughter
DR. WILLIS: (ENTERS WITH MRS. KING) Sit down, please. Mrs. King, your daughter ...
MRS. KING: I can't sit. Debbie ...
DR. WILLIS: As I was about to say, Mrs. King, your daughter has been responding to my treatment very well.
MRS. KING: No, she hasn't, Dr. Willis. That's why I'm here.
DR. WILLIS: These things take time. Remember, I told you that when we began these treatments.
MRS. KING: I remember you said my daughter was schizophrenic.
DR. WILLIS: (GLANCING AT FOLDER) A paranoid type with delusional features.
MRS. KING: I remember.
DR. WILLIS: Debbie's schizophrenia is probably a result of a chemical imbalance and poor brain circuitry.
MRS. KING: Not in her case. I know that's what you thought in the beginning, but as it turned out it was a spiritual problem, not a physical one. She was demonized.
DR. WILLIS: Mrs. King, I think we talked about this. There are no such things as demons, and therefore there is no such condition as being demonized. Your daughter is not demonized. She has schizophrenia.
MRS. KING: She was demonized, Doctor.
DR. WILLIS: Mrs. King, I think it would be better if you didn't speak about such things. These are your own fantasies and cannot but do harm to the child.
MRS. KING: But, Dr. Willis, I know that these problems began when Debbie became involved in the New Age teachings.
DR. WILLIS: The New Age movement has done a lot of good.
MRS. KING: Hardly. It was New Age teaching about channeling that got Debbie into trouble. She had a spirit guide. That's how she got demonized. The spirit guide that seemed so good to her at first was a demon.
DR. WILLIS: Mrs. King, it's difficult to communicate with you when you keep insisting that your daughter is demonized.
MRS. KING: Dr. Willis, it's just as difficult for me to communicate with you as it is for you to communicate with me when you don't acknowledge a basic truth.
DR. WILLIS: Mrs. King, you are the one who discontinued the treatments. We have seen remarkable improvement sometimes in less than a year. I'm a busy man. I insist that you bring Debbie in to see me and continue treatments and stop this nonsense about demons and being demonized.
MRS. KING: You never understood the causes of my daughter's problems and therefore you could never have helped her.
DR. WILLIS: Mrs. King, I'm sure that we can work out our little differences.
MRS. KING: I don't see them as little differences. There is a spiritual world, Dr. Willis, whether you acknowledge it or not.
DR. WILLIS: My experience has taught me no such thing.
MRS. KING: Debbie was subtly educated in the New Age teachings.
DR. WILLIS: You need to bring Debbie back to me.
MRS. KING: Oh, no, Dr. Willis. Debbie doesn't need you, now. She is healed. We had a deliverance and Jesus healed her.
DR. WILLIS: Preposterous!
MRS. KING: Only the power of God can save a person who is demonized and that's why Debbie is whole again.
DR. WILLIS: I think you'd be wise, Mrs. King, to bring Debbie in to see me and to continue my treatments.
MRS. KING: She's in the waiting room. You can see that she's well.
DR. WILLIS: All right, we'll see.
MRS. KING: Debbie, honey, would you come in and see Dr. Willis.
DEBBIE: (ENTERS) Hello, Dr. Willis. Did Mother tell you about my deliverance?
DR. WILLIS: Er, yes. Yes, she did. Ah, Debbie, how do you feel?
DEBBIE: I feel just fine. Great, in fact. I've been set free, Doctor. I'm me again.
DR. WILLIS: Set free? Free from what?
DEBBIE: All the lies I believed -- and hurting myself. I'm free.
DR. WILLIS: Yes, uh, thank you, Debbie. May I talk to your mother alone?
DEBBIE: Sure, doctor. Good-bye. (SHE EXITS)
MRS. KING: Well, Doctor, what do you think? You can see she is well now.
DR. WILLIS: Hmmm. This certainly is an unusual development. I'd like to continue my treatment to make sure she's stabilized.
MRS. KING: She's gone back to school and is doing fine. She knows now to test everything against the Word of God and she knows how important it is to have Christian friends.
DR. WILLIS: Mrs. King, I believe you are both deluded. To think that the organized church can be an instrument in healing is ridiculous.
MRS. KING: Doctor, Debbie and I came in today to share with you the spiritual root of her problem. There are many Christian psychiatrists today that would agree with me. I brought this book. I hope you will read it. (HANDS HIM THE BOOK)
DR. WILLIS: Your daughter needs professional help. What I should do is to notify the proper authorities concerning this.
MRS. KING: Good bye, Doctor. (SHE EXITS)
