A CLOAK
Worship
SYMBOLS OF SACRIFICE
Year 3, Lenten Congregational Resources
Preparation: Each week during the Lenten season we are asking
church members to present a symbol of sacrifice. The Lenten
season is a time of penitence as we bring before God the
brokenness of our lives asking for God's healing and forgiveness.
Each week a symbol of the sacrifice that Jesus made will be
presented. As we remember his body broken these symbols will
remind us of the forgiveness his sacrificial death made possible.
Thank you for your willingness to share in worship in this
way. After the opening portion of the worship service one of the
pastors will invite you to come forward. Please come to the
lectern on the north side. Present the symbol with the readings
below and place the symbol on the first available post on that
side. Then lead us in prayer and return to your seat.
Individually or with others in the days before Sunday share
what the symbol of sacrifice symbolizes for you. In what ways are
you feeling penitent and in what areas of your life are you
needing healing and forgiveness?
Come To The Lectern And
Read: Mark 11:7-8 -- "Then they brought the colt to Jesus and
threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread
their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that
they had cut in the fields."
Share: Jesus' followers found a way to honor him. A people's
parade was created because the people believed that Jesus was
important enough to celebrate. The people believed in themselves
and in Jesus. Jesus brought out joy and celebration in people. He
brought out what we call self-worth.
This cloak reminds us to believe in ourselves and to celebrate our worth.
Place: The cloak on the first available post. After the
offering has been received and the Doxology sung:
Pray: God, these bills and coins are our palm branches and
these checks are our cloaks. Help us to feel Hosannas welling up
within us as we give our gifts. God fill us with the confidence
that Christ sees in us that we might believe in him. Amen.
