Collect
You bring us change when you call us in the night, O God. We do not want to sleep through your call. Guide us so we may respond to you in a trustworthy manner. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God, who invites us to stretch our souls, you call our name in direction-choosing times. Help us to discern your call from all the other babble clamoring for our time, money, and energy. Lead us toward wholehearted responses that reflect faithfulness to your hopes for us. Amen.

Call To Worship
Even now the shadow of autumn leaves colors the summertime of trees. Occasional tips of deepening color hint of death yet green vitality governs its life-giving design. Come, let us begin worship together.
Collect
Leader: We are afflicted in every way,
People: but not crushed;
Leader: perplexed,
People: but not driven to despair;
Leader: persecuted,
People: but not forsaken;
Leader: struck down,
People: but not destroyed.
Leader: So death is at work in us,
People: but life in you, O God,
All: because of our choice of faith, because of your presence in our lives. We praise you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Dear God, we need to keep a balance between what brings darkness into our lives and your light that persists in bursting through that darkness. Let us accept what draws us toward awareness of our mortality while seeing clearly that the life you give is also at work in us bringing us to fullness of life. Amen.
39B Hymns1
"Hush, Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name" Tune: AFRICAN-AMERICAN SPIRITUAL
"O God, As With A Potter's Hand" Tune: WINSTON-SALEM
"Steal Away" Tune: STEAL AWAY
Proper 4
Sunday between May 29 and June 4 inclusive
Gospel: Mark 2:23--3:6
Theme: It's The Law
Call To Worship
God calls us to live by a higher law. God calls us to attend to the rule of compassion. God calls us to take responsibility for bringing about changes in our community and within the world community that will help people live better lives. Come, let us answer this call as we assume an attitude of worship.
Collect
We would be tenderhearted toward others who suffer, O compassionate God. We would become hardhearted toward our own self-serving and that we find in others. We would serve you without becoming self-righteous. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We ask for courage, O God, to do what is right even when we suspect it will bring us trouble. Teach us to ignore the ease of following the status quo for the wrong reasons. Help us persist while knowing that some misuse the law for their own interests. As we make our decisions, lead us toward asking what Jesus would do. We pray in his name. Amen.
