Series II, Cycle A Gospel Texts
The Community Awaits God's Coming
"For whom are we waiting, anyway?"
Plan for a family to light the Advent candles.
Invitation to the Celebration
Use one more time, "Hey! Hey! Anybody Listening?" Encourage visitors to hum or whistle. Invite those who have been coming during Advent to walk around the sanctuary greeting one another as they sing. Following the pastoral invitation, sing an Advent hymn. Offer a prayer of praise for the coming, yet present, Messiah. To conclude the Advent portion of worship, read Isaiah 40:1-8, from the J. B. Phillips translation.
The Community Celebrates Christ's Birth
"God so loves the world that God gave the only forgotten son. Remember?"
Invite several readers, with whom you or someone will practice. Use a variety of musicians and musical instruments. Use different versions of Scripture. (My personal favorites are the Phillips and Cotton Patch translations.)
Consider the following order:
Congregation: Carol: "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night"
Scripture: Micah 5:2-4. (Have the readers scattered throughout the sanctuary.)
Choir with violinist: "Lo, How a Rose" Michael Praetorius.
Scripture: Luke 2:16.
Congregation: Carol: "O Little Town of Bethlehem" stanzas 1, 2
Scripture: Luke 2:1-7.
Children's Carol: (sung by children or children's choir) "Away in a Manger"
Scripture: Luke 2:8-9.
Choir and Instruments: "As Lately We Watched" Austrian Carol
Scripture: Luke 2:10-14.
Congregation: Carol: "Angels from the Realm of Glory"
Scripture: Luke 2:21-41, selected verses.
Congregation: Carols: "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" stanzas 1, 2; "Born in the Night, Mary's Child"; and "On This Day, Earth Shall Ring"
Pastor: (Read from the Newer Covenant) 2 Corinthians 9:6 to the end
Meditation: "The Incomparable Gift" 2 Corinthians 9:15
Build the meditation around this: Years ago, a well-known distillery advertised its most famous bourbon as "the gift incomparable." Really now!
Prayer Response to the Meditation: Ahead of time, ask several people to pray.
Choir and Instruments with the Prayer: "For To Us A Child is Born"
The Community Responds To Christ's Presence
"Have we chosen to call ourselves after Christ's name and refused to follow after his life?"
Ceremony Of Candle-Lighting
Check with the legal authorities about candle-lighting in your area. If you have everyone light candles, give explicit directions and cautions.
During the lighting, have a soloist sing "O Holy Night." Following the singing and lighting of candles, have the people remain in silence for two minutes. Follow this with sentence prayers by the people.
Carols
"What Child Is This?"; "Silent Night"; "Joy to the World"
Charge to the Congregation
The birth of Jesus holds no eternal promise without his death, resurrection, presence; for the Spirit of God draws us toward his total ministry and mission. So, the question is this: What are we doing with the one who is called Jesus the Savior and Christ the Lord? What will we do with Jesus the Christ, Immanuel, God with us, the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace? We will not escape answering those questions in word and deed, in thought and action, by decision or default.
Carol
"Joy to the World," using all the choirs, the instruments, including the hand instruments and the congregation, with energy, enthusiasm!
Meditation
"The person who has no Christmas in his/her heart will never find Christmas under a tree." For, "Gratitude is the memory of the heart."
