Beginning The Journey To Calvary
Second Lesson Sermons For Lent/Easter
For centuries Christians have gathered on Ash Wednesday to begin the Lenten journey to Calvary. The palm branches from the previous Palm/Passion Sunday are burnt, providing the ashes for the service. The form and content of this special service have always focused on the dual themes of sin and death in light of God's redeeming love in Jesus Christ. The imposition of the ashes seems appropriate with their dark earth color, somber hue, and rough texture suggesting the character of the day and the Lenten journey that lies ahead.
