Ash Wednesday
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Joel 2:1-2, 12-17
Theme: Return To Me
Call To Worship
It is Ash Wednesday, the time to return to God from wherever we have wandered in spirit. Let people of all ages return to the community of God with wholehearted vigor. Return to me, says our God, for God is gracious and merciful and slow to anger. God abounds in steadfast love and relents from punishing.
Collect
As we walk with Jesus through these forty days and forty nights, we would become more like Jesus. Make us more holy, O God. Make us more humble and more faithful because of Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Thoughts about Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent set off an inner alarm of darkness and gloom, O God. We remember Jesus' long journey through Lent to the cross. Lead us gently toward our own meditative journeys, because we would rather skip over the searching time of growth and leap quickly to Easter joy.
Amen.
19A Hymns1
"Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days" Tune: LAND OF REST
"Sunday's Palms Are Wednesday's Ashes" Tune: BEACH SPRING
"Lord, Make Me More Holy" Tune: LORD, MAKE ME MORE HOLY
Ash Wednesday
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 5:20b--6:10
Theme: Reconcile
Call To Worship
How does the way you live champion yourself to God? Ash Wednesday is the time to begin looking at how we live out the Christian way both in our inner life and in the world.
Collect
Lent is a time, dear God, that we come particularly close to you. Remembering these weeks of struggle in Jesus' life, we listen more closely for your kind presence within our silence and throughout our babel. We sense that you are also listening to us and encouraging us to live in a manner that brings us closer to your hope for us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Help us, merciful and gracious God, to reconcile ourselves to the way you would have us live. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
19A Hymns1
"Beneath The Cross Of Jesus" Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
"Father In Heaven, Who Lovest All" Tune: HESPERUS or SAXBY
"Were You There?" Tune: WERE YOU THERE
Ash Wednesday
Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
Theme: Look At Me!
Call To Worship
Ash Wednesday begins a period of reflection. Let us remember that reflection is active pondering about the meaning of our lives, the life of Jesus, and God's continued, graceful presence. It mirrors the influence of our beliefs upon our actions. Come now with God's support and sustenance and begin this quiet time.
Collect
We come here, God, to examine the old ways we need to shed as people of faith. You invite us to ponder the difference between what we believe and how we act. Help us grow in truth. Help us determine what is sacrifice and what is for offering in gratitude. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Leader: As we begin this searching time of Lent, let us ask whom we are trying to impress.
People: God, let the actions of our regret be private lest they focus attention on us.
Leader: Let us ask how we can best express our trying to be acceptable before God.
All: Let the deepening of our Lenten attitudes and actions toward others reflect a deepening faith. Amen.
19A Hymns1
"Before The Cross Of Jesus" Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
"Have Thine Own Way, Lord" Tune: ADELAIDE
"Lord, Dismiss Us With [Thy][Your] Blessing" Tune: SICILIAN MARINERS
