The Ascension Of Our Lord
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
Our lives end in the middle of the story. We leave the stage before discovering how our story will turn out ... Religion is our human response to the dual reality of being alive and having to die ... I do not disbelieve in an afterlife; I simply have no experience of an afterlife ... Nothing could be weirder or more amazing than life before death.
-- Forrest Church, Love and Death
Call To Worship
Leader: It's Ascension Day, the day we celebrate Jesus' return to God, forty days after Easter. The scriptures say that the disciples were filled with joy when Jesus was taken up into heaven. After that, they spent all their time in the temple giving thanks to God.
People: They must not have had to work for a corporation! Or punch a time clock!
Leader: In fact, times are very different but the image of Jesus returning to God is essential for our faith.
People: He didn't stay dead and buried! He returned to life and to God!
Leader: In all of our texts for today, there is reference to Jesus' return to the divine home.
People: With Jesus absent, people looked forward to the coming of the Holy Spirit. We are thankful for the stories of Jesus' ascension to heaven, and we anticipate a fresh presence of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
God of Heaven and Earth -- we are glad you are our God. We find ourselves turning to you like disciples through the ages; we experience you as loving and dependable. We celebrate Jesus' ascension to heavenly places. In his absence, we expect a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Speak through us so that the kingdom of God Jesus spoke of comes to our town. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
The writer of Luke and Acts thought repentance and forgiveness were vital for friends of Jesus. Pray with me the printed prayer and then continue your own conversation with God.
Community Confession (Unison)
God of Jesus, Mary, and Paul -- our burdens sometimes are very heavy.
Sometimes our shame and our guilt depress our hopes.
Whatever road we've taken to get where we are, let your Spirit move through us freeing us from the ties to earthly greed and jealousy; set us on a new path -- straight for the kingdom of God. Amen.
Word Of Grace (Leader)
God is present with us -- Christ Spirit, Holy Spirit, Divine Spirit! Look around; notice the Spirit supporting and challenging us in our attitudes and our actions. It is good news that Jesus reigns on high and we are forgiven, free from guilt.
Sermon Idea
What is the meaning of ascension for twenty-first-century friends of Jesus? We do not have monarchs; our cosmology doesn't allow us to envision a tiered universe with God and Jesus at the top; our understanding of God and nations is more inclusive than the writer of the psalms would allow. The meaning for now might include going beyond the boundaries of the temple, beyond the Jews, to other peoples and nations, beyond geography and physics. Ascension might draw us to practice walking with mystery, without understanding; it might focus us on the absent Jesus and the invisible present Spirit. Ascension might encourage us to let go of what preceded our story and look forward to the next one. The story of Jesus' life on earth is concluded but his influence continues. Another theme might be: Standing still, looking up, and participating with the Spirit's creative endeavors! And there is that statement that Jesus will return in a similar way. How does Jesus come to us? Does Jesus "come again" now?
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We believe Jesus lived, died, and rose to new life.
From heaven he came; to heaven he returned.
In his absence, he sent the Holy Spirit to comfort us and to empower us to care for the earth, for the oppressed, for the hungry, and for justice.
We celebrate his life and his teachings with words and with our lifestyles.
We proclaim that the "kingdom of God" is coming now and we are cocreators with the Holy One! Amen. Let it be so!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Up and down, side to side -- everywhere divinity is present! Everywhere there is blessing and need. Let's combine our resources so bills can be paid and justice has a chance to win over violence.
Doxology
Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! (v. 2), tune: HYFRYDOL stanza 2
Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now.
Alleluia! He is near us; faith believes nor questions how.
Though the cloud from sight received him when the forty days were o'er.
Shall our hearts forget his promise, "I am with you ever more"?
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
For the stories of Jesus and for the wonders of life, we are grateful. For the places of God -- up and down, in and out -- we rejoice! For money, talents, and jobs we are thankful. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leaders or Readers)
God of Up -- we have been taught that "up" is positive and that "down" is negative. Yet at the same time we declare that all the world has been declared "good." As we walk the way of Jesus, let us be awake enough to notice the value in all creatures and in all creation. When our paths take us "down" into the shadows, let us feel your presence and sustaining wisdom. When our paths take us "up" to ecstasy, let us celebrate the breath of life and the mysteries inherent in our human journey.
God of Yesterday and Tomorrow -- our stories parallel Jesus' in many ways. He is our Savior as we learn to translate his compassion into twenty-first-century issues. He is our Messiah as we explore peace-making. He is the Christ as we practice loving God, self, and neighbor. Let yesteryear's stories give us a sense of direction for tomorrow.
God of Stillness and Motion -- our hands and our hearts are often so busy that we miss your subtle grace. Throughout the world we see people who are frantic with physical pain, emotional wounds, and financial requirements. Whatever the suffering, let healing move in close; let inner peace swell; let there be enough nurture and money for each day.
God of Teachers and Students -- humankind is learning so much about how the universe functions. We are learning how the human body works, what it will tolerate, and what causes it to die. We eagerly pass all this knowledge on to the next generation. Let us also mentor them in compassion, honesty, gentleness, and kindness. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
As you leave here, greet one another.
As you leave here, look up for signs of Divine creativity.
As you leave here, look around for the invisible Christ.
As you leave here, look down for the darkness and shadows that are yours to walk through.
As you leave here, rejoice in the mysteries of resurrection and ascension.
Amen. Let it be so!
