The Spirit is like the wind
Children's sermon
Object:
a hat, an umbrella, a kite
Good morning, boys and girls. I remember a big wind about a week ago and it was really something! I was just walking along when a hat flew right into me. It was a hat like this. The man it belonged to was running down the street, trying to catch it.
Other strange things happened that windy day. It started to rain so I put up my umbrella. I thought it would protect me against the rain, but the wind turned my umbrella inside-out. Instead of protecting me, it was leading me, pulling me faster and faster.
When the clouds went away, the wind was still strong. I went down to the park to watch the children flying kites. I watched the wind grab a kite and draw it up in the air. It went higher and higher until I could barely see it.
Did you ever wonder where the wind comes from? (let them answer) Does it start out on top of a mountain somewhere? (let them answer) Does it come from a lot of trucks speeding down a highway?
Jesus said it is a mystery. The wind can come from any direction. It can range anywhere from a soft, gentle breeze to a hurricane or tornado. It seems like it comes out of nowhere.
Jesus said the Spirit of God is like the wind. No one could figure out where the Spirit came from or where it went. The Spirit is invisible and yet it can change our lives in a moment. On many occasions Jesus prayed to the Spirit to bring him a gift like calmness, or new energy, or a sign from heaven. Sometimes the Spirit would come with such a rush that people thought the world was coming to an end. Other times it was just a cool, gentle breeze that made a man want to just lie down in the grass and stare up at the sky.
We don't always listen for the Spirit like we should. But the Spirit is around you, speaking to you, and assisting you in becoming a lifetime Christian. The Spirit speaks in a very small voice but it does many great things. Someday the Spirit will come to you when you are ready and will help you make a lifetime decision. You will hear the words of God being spoken to you and you will listen. God will then send you on your way, back into the world to help someone else find God. The Spirit is a wonderful friend and makes everything clear and good.
