Preaching Eyes for Listening Ears
Sermons and Commentary For Preachers and Students of Preaching
This sermon was first preached in the chapel of Columbia Seminary during the Advent season of 1987. It has been used since that time in two churches during Advent.
It uses the image of untying shoestrings based on John the Baptist's declaration that he was not worthy to untie the thongs of Jesus' sandals. Then it lays alongside that story the narrative of Jesus washing the disciples' feet. The one whose shoes John did not feel worthy to untie, removes the shoes of his disciples and washes their feet.
