Call To Worship
(Includes the lighting of the Advent Wreath)
Leader: Good morning! We've gathered for various reasons; some of us are dreading being alone during this season; some of us to enjoy the holiday music and decorations. Most of us anticipate remembering the Christmas story with its holy family.
People: Yes, we love the Christmas story and the images that remind us we too carry God into the world.
Leader: We will sing and pray, dance and sing the old story of God coming into the world as a baby -- a vulnerable baby!
People: Like Mary and Elizabeth, we will serve God and we will pray that God will keep us safe in a topsy-turvy world. Like Zechariah, we name our children, encouraging them to use their talents for God.
Leader: Ring the bells! Clap your hands! Our hearts rejoice.
People: We make a circle and light candles! We sing of love!
Leader: Listening for truth and passing it along with joy is an awesome task. We have received the good news that God, the Holy One, comes to us in unexpected forms. We receive the divine and invite holiness to be at home in us!
(Light two purple candles on the Advent Wreath; light the pink one and then the third purple candle. All four candles burn brightly.)
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Living God -- we thank you for John and Jesus. We recognize people who make the way easier for us like John did for Jesus. We recognize teachers whose wisdom follows us all our lives -- like Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and his vivid parables. We are grateful for God's coming to earth and for the care that Mary and Joseph gave to Jesus. During this hour, we listen for fresh ways to embody the Holy and to receive the love offered us. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Sin separates us from God and from one another -- whether it be action, attitude, or things left undone. Sin for you might be wrong thoughts about the right thing or right thoughts about the wrong thing. Now is your opportunity to reflect and work out with God changes that will give you peace and freedom. Pray with me the printed prayer and then continue your conversation in silence with God.
Community Confession (Unison)
Loving God -- we don't offer you burnt offerings; we offer you a home on earth -- our minds, bodies, and souls.
Our thoughts and behaviors, our loves and our hates, quite different from the first century, get in the way of our being satisfied with living.
Help us be aware of the behaviors that bring disempowering consequences to us.
Renew us with deep peace so that we carry goodness into the world. Amen.
Word Of Grace (Leader)
Like a lovely dawn, God moves over us and sets us free from guilt and shame. You can be like the sun filling the darkness! Hallelujah!
Congregational Choral Response
Canticle of Mary, Magnificat (v.1, modified)
My soul gives glory to our God, my soul sings forth its praise;
God immerses us in loveliness in many marvelous ways!
Sermon Idea
There are so many Bible stories about relationships and places that still affect history today, even our daily lives. John and Jesus were cousins and at least the men looked for some sort of tension between them. But neither John nor Jesus set about to compete for the greatest number of followers. Palestine and Israel today torment each other as did Ishmael and Isaac, Esau and Jacob thousands of years ago. It's difficult to use some of the symbols of the Christmas story without feeling sad about the events in the Holy Land. Nevertheless, we can rejoice with the idea that we are fetus-people, nurtured in the womb of God as Jesus was nurtured by Mary. A vital fetus is always moving and the mother at some point is ready to birth the baby into the world to grow on its own. Our understanding of human maturation and of God changes as we grow. I suspect Jesus matured, too, perceiving God differently as his experiences with the Divine expanded. A title/theme might be: Symbols of the Divine for our times.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We experience God among us as creative Spirit stimulating our thoughts, working through our hands and our feet to make a bit of heaven on earth.
We believe God is among us -- vulnerable and strong, loving and sustaining each one who welcomes the Holy.
We know God is in this world; we dream of fresh political structures that are fair, respectful, and inclusive.
We trust that God is reconciling families and nations and resurrecting the God-image in all persons.
Through every part of our human journey, God is with us; we are not alone. Hallelujah.
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Our bodies are the homes we have for ourselves and for God. We take care of them and we reach out to others, encouraging them to care for their bodies, too. With our money, our talents, and our skills, we do provide food for hungry people, chairs for tired people, and help for homeless people. Let's combine resources so we can minister here and in other places.
Doxology
While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks (v. 6)
All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace;
Good will to all from highest heaven
Begin and never cease! Begin and never cease!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Everliving God -- we are thankful for money and jobs, talents and skills that make life together good and provide for others. If only no one would go to bed at night hungry! If only everyone would have a roof overhead! We pray for your reign to manifest on earth. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Creating Spirit -- we read the Christmas story and imagine how it might have been for pregnant Mary and anxious Joseph, how it might have been to birth a first child without the comforts of hot water and soft mattresses; without numbing drugs for the pushing pains. We imagine people waiting and watching for new leadership. And we realize that we are the shepherds and the magi; we are the citizens being counted and taxed. There are people around us who find signs that say, "Sorry, no room." We pray for humankind. Create among us all a mind and passion for justice and kindness.
Birthing Spirit -- no matter how old we are, we long to be held and rocked, loved, and touched. Within each of us is that child who seeks wholeness and strength. Within each of us is the hope that you labor us into the world so that when the time is right, we labor you into the world.
Healing Spirit -- no matter how old we are, our bodies feel pain; our psyches receive wounds, and our relationships come apart. Overcome us with wholeness; overpower us with grace, and let us feel peace and comfort from head to toe.
Spirit of Peace -- we pray for this planet. Some say it is abused and sick; some say, so what. We pray for the tribes that still live by the laws of retaliation. We pray for children who are maimed by adults. We pray for adults who hurt other adults. We pray for our government and our leaders; give them wisdom, courage, and skill. We long for peace and prosperity for all peoples -- without deception, greed, and hoarding. We pray for peace everywhere.
Spirit of Christ -- you are birthed again into our minds and into our world. Help us give you room to be and to grow. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Like the shepherds, sing and dance with each other;
Like the magi, be curious about nature;
Like Mary and Joseph, nourish the Divine;
As your own authentic self, use your hands and your feet, your voice and your mind, to make plenty of room for your own loved ones and for those in need.
And as a Christmas gift to satisfy yourself --
Want what you have, do what you can, and be who you are!
