The world's largest shopping mall...

The world's largest shopping mall is in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, not far from the church I currently serve. Besides hundreds of stores and restaurants, the mall has an amusement park, a water park, a miniature golf course, an ice rink, and a marine show with performing dolphins, and even a fleet of submarines! Having something for everyone, it has changed the way of life for an entire city and its hinterland, becoming almost a temple to consumerism. My previous charge was 90 miles farther away. The congregation was small and struggling to survive as an independent parish. We were attempting to build up the sense of community through a number of parish events, usually focussing on pot-luck lunches for Sunday worship. One such day had been planned for several weeks, to be coordinated by the ladies' group. I had high hopes for it, until on the Friday before, the ladies' president came to my office and announced that the seniors' center had chartered a bus for a trip to the Mall on Sunday! Several of our ladies decided to go. Once again, the lights and glitter of the world seemed to have beaten out the Bread of Life. -- Walker
