Wisdom and folly
Commentary
Are we to be fools for Christ, or wise as serpents (and innocent as doves)? Our readings today commend wisdom, restraint, and discernment in 1 Kings and Ephesians, while in John’s gospel Jesus speaks and acts in blatantly foolish ways -- the kind of ways that eventually got him arrested, tried, and crucified. When does God call us to wisdom, and when does God call us to speak and act in ways that the world deems unwise? Can acting “unwisely” sometimes be the wisest thing we do?
