We have the promise from God that the "Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations." (v. 11b) We want righteousness to spring up before us and before all people. But what exactly is "righteousness"?
Long ago, Jewish judges decided who was "righteous" in the legal dispute before them by deciding who was "more than fair." As we hear the prophet Isaiah preach to us the good news of God's love for us, we hear of God being "more than fair" in his dealings with us sinners.
It is good news indeed to hear of God's love when we realize that our sinful natures make us poor in love, brokenhearted in despair, held captive to fear, imprisoned by doubt, and mournful in our mortality. Instead of condemning us for our sins, God sends Isaiah to "preach good news to the poor ... bind up the broken-hearted ... proclaim freedom for the captives ... release for the prisoners ... comfort for those who mourn." Thanks be to God that our Sovereign Lord is a righteous judge who sees our sin, yet is "more than fair" in granting us forgiveness through his Son.
