The visiting evangelist was spending the night in the home of a young couple of the congregation where he was preaching. As he awakened the next morning, he heard a soprano voice singing, "Nearer My God, to Thee."
When he sat down at the breakfast table, he told his hostess he had never heard it sung that fast. The lady replied: "Oh, I guess that's because I wasn't paying too much attention to the words. You see, it's a song my mother used to sing, and I've found that it's a good one to boil eggs by. You just repeat the first verse five times rapidly for soft-boiled, and eight times for hard."
If the hostess had paid attention to the words of the hymn, she would have realized the greatness of the promise of Isaiah in this passage. He reminds us that God's city of salvation is the place where the righteous dwell. The dead will rise and sing for the joy of being nearer to God as they go there.
