Union forces named it the Battle of Antietam (Maryland). Confederates dubbed it the
Battle of Sharpsburg. It was the bloodiest battle in American history. The Union started
with knowledge of how the Confederates planned to fight. Two Union soldiers found a
copy of Lee's plans wrapped around three cigars lying in a field.
Union general, McClellan, didn't make as much with the information as he could, but without "Special Order 191" lying on the old Confederate campground, the battle could have been worse for the Union. It wasn't a Union victory, but enough of a stalemate to encourage Lincoln soon to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
Isaac walked in a field, not knowing what would happen next. Rebekah approached, also unaware of what would issue from this encounter.
