Sometimes the truth is communicated less with syllables and more with energy, persuasion, and conviction.
Wilhelm Furtwangler, a German conductor and composer, developed a reputation for the artful way he led the Berlin Philharmonic through works by Beethoven and Wagner. On one occasion, a friend, Gregor Piatigorsky, was present at a rehearsal. He remembers how Furtwangler stopped the symphony in the middle of a musical phrase. His next words, to his all-male ensemble, were, "Gentlemen, this phrase must be ... it must be ... it must ... you know what I mean ... please try it again."
Afterward, Furtwangler complacently remarked to Piatigorsky, "You see how important it is for a conductor to convey his wishes clearly?"
