"For the present form of this world is passing away" (1 Corinthians 7:30b).
Charles' wife had died during the Christmas season. What a horrible way to remember Christmas. He had always thought that statistically women live longer than men. He never thought that he would be the one left behind after so many years of marriage.
In his discussion on being unmarried and widowed, Paul reminds us "the present world is passing away." There is a larger reality. Combined with what Paul would say later in 1 Corinthians 15:15-58 (We will not die, but change in a moment), Charles and the many others who have lost loved ones have authentic hope that a new reality is coming as this world passes away.
