Popocatepetl, at 17,802 feet, is one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world. It is in Mexico. It last erupted about 820 A.D. but has been smoking and exploding since 1994. Some communities are as close as seven miles from the crater, and some 20 million live within a 50-mile radius. Village officials are trying to warn their inhabitants of the danger the volcano threatens and prepare escape plans. Vehicles are identified and people are assigned to specific ones.
