Please read verses 10-13 before you get into this reading for today. There is an important cohesiveness between them. It is kind of like having the horse with the cart.
This reading is a call to mimic or mime or copycat. Paul is very much aware of the saintly life he has lived. He puts his life forth as a witness and proof of the life that can be lived in Christ (verses 10-13). In no way is it a bragging session. "What I have done, you can do," Paul seems to be saying.
How is it possible? Paul affirms, "... the Lord rescued me." His alive-ness, life, and faith result from his working relationship with the Lord.
Now he can go on to challenge those of us who profess faith to start acting as though Jesus would "rescue me (too)."
Our commencement begins. To preach is our job. Be urgent is our state of mind. Convince, rebuke, and exhort are our tools. Patience is our posture. Teaching is to be our purpose. A heavy calling is upon us. But we have been prepared.
We have been prepared to enter persecution and warfare (if we are really doing our jobs, that is).
The Lord will rescue you.
