In this passage, the author of Hebrews states that one who is chosen to be high priest "is able to deal gently with the ignorant and the wayward," because the high priest knows weakness within himself and must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for the sins of others. Such a sense of empathy is not always found among those who have been selected for high ecclesiastical offices. An old saying declares that when a man becomes a bishop, he will never thereafter eat a bad meal, read a good book, or hear the truth. Some folk fear that the One who hears our prayers will not be gentle toward us as sinners. An alcoholic had fallen off the wagon. Suffering a hangover, he asked his wife to pray for him. She kneeled, folded her hands, and began, "Oh, Lord, Mike has gone and gotten himself drunk again ..." "Wait, wait!" the man interrupted. "Don't tell him I'm drunk. Just say that I'm sick."
