One thousand years before Christ...
Illustration
One thousand years before Christ, when David was king of Israel, an epidemic broke out and 70,000 men died. Finally, the epidemic reached the gates of Jerusalem. Suddenly, the awful destruction stopped, as if by a word from the Lord. The epidemic came to an end at a farm that belonged to a man named Oman.
God indicated to David that he should go and build an altar on Oman's farm. When Oman saw King David and his men coming, Oman bowed low and asked, "Your majesty, why are you here?" David answered, "To buy your threshing place and build an altar for the Lord." Later, on that very spot, the great Temple of Solomon would be built. Oman was so honored by the king's presence on his farm that he offered the land, the oxen and the wood necessary for the sacrifice free of charge. David replied, "No, I will pay you for it. I will not offer to the Lord my God sacrifices that have cost me nothing" (2 Samuel 24:24).
