One late afternoon in Florence...
One late afternoon in Florence, we got caught in a terrific downpour and found ourselves seeking refuge in the Duomo, the Cathedral. We had not been there previously. We shook ourselves off top to bottom like puppy dogs and then we began to wander around, mostly waiting for the sound of rain to stop on the high cathedral ceiling, until we wandered around a corner and came upon a sculpture that caught us off our guard in its power, and captivated us in a manner I shall never forget. It was Michelangelo's Pieta, not the very familiar one with Mary, that is in St. Peter's.
