Faithful users
Children's sermon
Object:
Play money
Good morning! This morning I want to retell a story Jesus
once told to teach us the importance of being faithful users of
what God gives us. A boy named Freddy Faithful got ten dollars as
a gift. He wanted to use his money very wisely so the first thing
he did was set one dollar aside to give to church that next
Sunday. This, the first dollar, he wanted to go to God. Then he
took the second dollar and put it aside in his savings. This
dollar was for a new bicycle he wanted to purchase someday. That
only left him with eight dollars to spend -- not ten. But Freddy
Faithful was happy. A girl named Suzy Cents also got ten dollars
as a gift. She gave fifty cents to church to honor God and spent
the nine and one-half dollars left on a CD for herself. A third
person named Sam Silly took his ten dollar gift and spent it all,
buying a huge hamburger, fries, and milkshake at a restaurant. He
could only eat part of it all, and the rest he threw away.
Now all three of these children, Sam Silly, Suzy Cents, and Freddy Faithful, had the same grandmother. In fact, they all got their gifts for their birthdays from their grandmother. But when Grandmother asked them how they spent their gifts, who do you think she thought spent the money best? (Let them answer.) She thought Freddy Faithful had spent his money best. On his next birthday, she gave him twenty dollars instead of ten. Suzy Cents got ten dollars again for her birthday. But Sam Silly got a gift and no money at all for his birthday.
The grandmother loved each of her grandchildren alike, but she knew that Freddy Faithful would spend his money wisely and she wanted to help him most because he spent his money wisely.
In the same way, God gives us money and so much more. What are some other things God gives us? (Let them answer.) God gives us our talents, our time, our lives! God wants us to use the gifts we receive from God wisely. God cares about how we spend our money and use our abilities, time, and everything in our lives.
Dear God: You give us everything and we are thankful. Teach us to be wise and faithful users of what you give us. Amen.
