An old shepherd was speaking to a passer-by about the changes brought on by modernization. “One thing they'll never do away with," he said, “is shepherding. Sheep'll need shepherds forever."
The need of a shepherd was obvious in the actions of the people around Jesus. They thronged the Master and his disciples. Even when Jesus took his tiny band into the desert for rest, people sought him out. There were no conditions into which they would not cast themselves if they could be near the Shepherd.
Sometimes we find our shepherd and the best shepherding in the most unlikely places. Accounts are made of shepherds on the high slopes who must go into the ranges to chase their sheep out of the hollows in the rock. The sheep find these little places and like them as refuge; but as winter sets in, they can become trapped in their holes by the snows. So Christ will often lead us out of our secure places and into the desert if we would hear his voice.
A pastor phoned in his message topic to the local newspaper: "The Lord is My Sherpherd." The clerk on the other end of the phone line asked if that was all. "That's enough," the pastor replied. When the issue came out, the pastor was surprised at the title which read, perhaps even more appropriately: "The Lord is My Shepherd - That's Enough."
